What is sponsorship?

A sponsorship in Love in Action means sponsoring the schooling of a child in Uganda. This includes a meal per day and includes all the childs school requirements, school clothes and tuition fees.

Can I send a gift or write to my child?

Yes, you can.

The address for the child?

CHILDREN LOVE LETTERS!

We have a policy that all communication between child and sponsor goes through Love in Action. This is a child protection measure and is common with most child sponsorship schemes. When writing to the child, please do not include your home address. We ask that you respect this, it will be removed if included in error. We reserve the right to check letters before handing them to the children.

When writing we ask you to remember that the children's 'world' is very small. Community is very important here and so writing to them about people is helpful, also about places etc..

Email letters will be printed out and taken to the school on our next scheduled visit.

Post is notoriously slow. Letters often take a month or more. Those with enclosures often do not arrive al all. Parcels may or may not arrive but can take more than two months.

When the child writes back to you, our Love in Action Trainee Social Worker in Uganda will collect the letter from the child and send it on to you.

What sort of thing is good to send to my child as a gift?

Toys like cars, dolls etc.. a photo of yourself, nailclippers (they use razorblades and cut themselves all the time).

Do not send: Computer Games, CD's, Toy Weapons. (Customs confiscate them). Also please do not send money or expensive items. Gifts containing fluids leak during transportation (shampoo etc.).

Obviously chocolate will melt, but sweets such as pastilles are appreciated. The children have a very sweet tooth, and do not like sweet 'n' sour or salty sweets.

However, we recommend you select items from our on-line shop as these have been carefully selected as being most needed and useful to our children.

What will my money be used for?

Every month we send the money to Uganda and then distribute it to the schools. This then covers the child's school fees. In addition. the child also receives one free meal during the day. For some children that will be the only meal they get during the day. Therefore it is incredibly important that the school can provide a substantial meal for the children.
Moreover approx. 10% a year per child is deducted for administration expenses.

What can you expect from us

We will see that the money is sent to the right person who we trust, and we will make sure that the money is spent in the right way to provide the benefit the child needs.

The bank account where we put the money in Uganda is only available to our trusted fellow workers in Love in Action, and the expenditure is all recorded and accounted for.

Furthermore we will send a newsletter to you twice a year. Once a year you will receive a new photo of your child, and twice a year you will receive a letter, and sometimes a school report.

We, Alan & Beryl are doing this work voluntarily, so it is not always possible for us to deal with each task as fast as we would wish.

What we expect from you

That the agreed amount is paid in to the Love in Action account promptly, whether it is monthly or yearly, as you originally informed us.

We expect you to be clear in your own mind about what sponsorship is, and the responsibility for the long-term well being of the child, and that you are able to continue the support over the child's schooling.

It is of course possible for you to leave the sponsorship if your circumstances change, but we want you to think of the consequences this will have on the needy child if you should decide to do this

The children who lose their sponsor will become very unhappy. They treasure their sponsor very much, and it is therefore very hard for the children to understand why they no longer have this support. We of course do whatever we can to find a new sponsor for the child, but this is not easy.

Please also remember to let us know if you change your address.

What can you expect from the child

You will receive a letter from the child twice a year. These letters may appear to be unpersonal, they are often dictated and the child writes down what the teacher has asked them to write to you, but please do not be disappointed by this. You need to know that the child really does appreciate the help they are being given.

When will the sponsorship stop?

The sponsorship stops when the child leaves school at S4.

The school classes go from P1 up to P7, and thereafter from S1 to S4 which is equivalent to Secondary School, and includes 'O' Level exams. Following this is S5 & S6 to take 'A' Levels and then University but the costs rise so if you wish to continue sponsoring your child we will discuss the individual child with you to help determine the costs involved.

As a guide S5 & S6 costs about £50 per month, if the children go to boarding school, which is very common at that level.

University education costs about £120 per month for full time education. But there is a way of studying at the weekends which costs about £35 - 50 per month depending on the course.

Volunteer Work with Love in Action

It is possible to come to Uganda, and to work in the schools. As we are not a large organisation, we are not able to pay you or to give you food, and we expect you to contribute towards the cost of your stay (approx £35 each per week, and collection/ return to the airport at Entebbe (about £75). We will provide housing from where you can help, for example as teachers in the school, and some volunteers are doing practical work such as helping with building and carpentry.

Our request to you, is that you are a mature and responsible person, that you are a Christian or that you understand that you are working with a Christian organisation and that tobacco, alcohol, and sex outside marriage, are not allowed while you are here with us in Uganda.

We are also able to organise Safaris and trips out, but these will be at your expense. Ask for details.

If you are still interested in coming to Uganda, you may contact us by e-mail
