Aisha is in Primary 3 and she is 14 years old. She lives with her father who is very old and unable to fully support his family since he can’t work. Lydia lost her father when she was about 3 years and her mother went and got married to another man and she now says that she does not have any children. After some time, Lydia was taken away from her family to care for an old lady. She was then taken into a government school. Lydia completed P.1 and P.4 and was then taken away from this lady’s home to another area where she went to another school. This time she was helped by the school. Lydia used to wash people’s clothes so that she could earn some money to pay for her exams, pens and books etc. When she started P.7, the school stopped helping her and a relative helped her pay her school fees for P7. Whilst Lydia was in P.7, she gave her life to Jesus (she got saved). Then she sat her P.7 exams which she passed and this enabled her to join secondary school. When Lydia told the people at home that she had got saved, they started to mistreat her and she was told to leave the place. At the same time Lydia had the news that her mother had died of aids. So Lydia left the area and went to live with her grandmother, from that time she never went back to school.

Ronald stays at Susan’s grand mother (Nnalongo- in our local language used to mean mother of twins) She was the mother of Ronald’s mother who died in 2002 April of HIV/AIDS. Harriet is 12 years old and she is in Primary 2. Harriet is a Munyarwanda by nationality. She says, that her family came as refugees to Uganda at the time of genocide in Rwanda with both of her parents. They tried to start a new living in Uganda by working in people’s gardens. Agnes’s parents divorced as a result of the wife getting in touch with another husband.They had a very nasty argument, and the mother resorted to leaving home for good and marrying another man. In fact, she presently has a child called Bilabwa (Agnes’ step sister) and Agnes says that however much her father objects she sometimes sneaks out to her mother in the next village to say hello as she loves her very much and misses her. Shakira is one of the youngest children at school. She is very shy and takes time before getting used to people. But once she be-friends someone, she really loves and trusts them. Caroline has one sister called Lilian who she travels with to school. Sadly their parents died when they were very young and Caroline who was the youngest never got a chance to see her mother as she died of HIV/AIDS shortly after Caroline's birth. Both children were left in the care of an aunt called Namwanje Zayituni who lives in one of the landing sites on lake Victoria's shores. She is a very poor young lady with 2 children, she is separated from her husband and struggles alot to sustain these 4 children with only a very small income. She has a temporary job,- she helps in sun-drying silver-fish (one of the traditional methods of fish preservation in Uganda) and this earns her around 500shs (15p) per day which is not enough to live on. This is one of the poorest, remote landing sites on the Lake Victoria shores, with very poor houses, poor sanitation, no proper health facilities, etc. Caroline and her 10 year old sister Lillian travel a very long distance to and from school each day, so they leave home very early and arrive home very late as it is getting dark. This is both very tiring and risky for the two little girls. Love In Action investigated how these two children could best be helped, and they have now been brought to stay with another relative who lives closer to Kasaka village for a while. They cannot afford uniform for school, and often come to school in very old and dirty clothes, which can be described as rags. The aunt faces alot of challenges bringing up Lillian and Caroline along side her 2 children since she doesn’t have any stable source of income. Their aunt owes both childrens school fees, which she keeps on promising to pay in future. If any one is willing to support either of them, it would be a great blessing to these little lives. Caroline would like to become a nurse when she grows up.

He was born on the 16th of April 1997. His father died in 1999 of HIV/AIDS and he remained with his mother whom he currently stays with. The mother- Jjuko Harriet was later married to another husband who was recently retrenched from his original job and now both of them have no jobs.
